ART MAKES FASHION, FASHION MAKES ART
Elitsa Dimitrova
The connection between art and fashion has come a long way. The collaboration of fashion designers and paintings by famous artists all around the world, brings new interesting clothes and accessories. How does the art become part of our wardrobe? How did all famous designers described all the details and build their fashion collections based on inspiring paintings of Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimnt, Heronymus Bpsch, Vincent van Gogh?
“Moschino”
The typical faces, painted on the Pablo Picasso’s work are noticed in famous designers’ fashion collections more than once. The autumn collection, presented by the designer Jeremy Scott – manager of “Moschino”, overtook the fashion week in Milano. The collection was completely devoted and inspired by Picasso’s pictures portrayed sculptural collages and identical use of the color palette. The presented models combined sharp shoulders, crushed forms and extra elements on dresses and two-piece suits, presenting completely the artist’s work.
“Karven”
One of the collection, created by the designer Guillaume Henry, representing fashion house “Karvan” was completely inspired by Bosch’s art. The models combined mini-dresses, skirts with a length above the knee and shirts with brightly colored prints, describing the paintings "Hay Carriage" and "The Garden of Earthly Delights" by Bosch. Other fashion designers as Alexander McQueen, Martens, Valentino were inspired over the years by the most mysterious artist’s works in the history of Western European painting
Virgil Ablo
In 2016 the designer Virgil Ablo was inspired by landscapes by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico for his collection. The two final images are a pleated dress and an asymmetrical skirt.
„Rotarde”
Van Gogh’s work can be seen everywhere in the world of fashion – from fashion house “Dior”’s clothes to Jeremy Scott’s models for “Moschino”.
The creators of the fashion brand Rotarde - sisters Kate and Laura recreated two of the most famous Van Gogh’s paintings "Sunflowers" and "Starry Night" in the form of pixelated prints on short dresses. The outfits, inspired by Gog's art, were presented during the New York Fashion Week - spring / summer 2012 collection. Long and short dresses, knee-length dresses and two-piece suits were presented during the fashion show. The details combined fine embroidery, sharp and dropped shoulders. The color palette emphasized the yellow and orange colors inspired by the painting "Sunflowers" and light and dark shades of blue describing the picture "Starry Night". This is not the first time the Mulewi sisters have intertwined fashion and art.
Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen’s collection is inspired by Gustav Klimt’s work The Kiss II. The outfits were presented with extreme proportions, such as elongated legs, sharp shoulders and narrowed waists, describing the female figure.
The palette that is used is dominated by metallic colors with golden elements. All this gathered in one suit or dress gives a very extreme and dramatic look.
„Gucci“
Many of the world's famous designers have been inspired and continue to draw inspiration from street art. This is the reason why Gucci's autumn / winter 2016 collection was created. The brand collaborated with the graffiti artist CucciGhost. The Canadian artist combined street art with fashion.
