THE GALACTIC ELEGANCE OF ROLAND MOURET
Liliya Zheleva
French designer Roland Mouret was born in Lourdes, France on August 27, 1961. Growing up in a butchery family, he works as a young man in his father's shop where he first learns how to fold the working apron to hide the bloody stain on it. Mouret observes with interest how the knife separates the skin from the animal - this mastery affects the confidence, immediacy, courage and aesthetics of his approach. Referring to Mouret's work, the famous British fashion writer Colin McDowell said: "The art of butchery and clothing is comparable, as both have the same precision of cutting, folding and handmade, and require courage and accurate judgment."
For twenty years, Roland Mouret has established himself as the leading light in international design. With prizes, including British designer of the Year by the Elle-Style Awards and a record three nominations of the British Fashion Awards Lycra, including 'Designer of the Year', his work is acknowledged and praised by both the fashion industry and beyond for his originality and his unique vision for women.
At first, the designer appeared on the fashion stages in Paris and London, working as an art director and stylist. Inspired by the works of Azzedine Alaïa, Mouret presented his first collection during the fashion week in London in February 1998, for which he received the great approval of critics and was awarded with the cover of Collezioni.
Roland Mouret creates one of the most desired collections for ladies. He remains in history with his emblematic "Galactic dress" which defines him as a magician, a master of structure, a silhouette, and a man with an intuitive understanding of female forms. It remains one of the favorite dresses of the red carpet stars, including Scarlett Johansson, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Demi Moore. "I drap, touch, the tissue takes a leading role, and the element of creation and transformation is always magical for me," Mouret says.
In September 2006, the designer began a partnership with Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment, allowing him to rethink how, when and where to create and show his collections. An interesting fact is that the young Bulgarian designer Maria Doychinova briefly trained with Roland Mouret, helping him with the preparation of his autumn-winter collection 2006-2007. While working for him she received an order for the design and execution of two pants for the famous Bono from U2.
In October 2008, Mouret presented a new collection - RM Bespoke Limited Edition. Based on the combination of his designer handwriting with draping techniques and a distinctive silhouette, he offers retailers to sell unique, limited edition dresses in exceptional colors and fabric. ""I'm self-taught. The adventure in my job is when I create, drap. I still discover, I'm still learning. I love the way the fabric feels, I like to grab it, I like the clothes on the body ... We all dress up to get dressed," says Mouret.
In 2010, the designer presented his first collection for men, with the idea of drawing attention to his brand, and in 2013 he launched collections of shoes, bags, sunglasses and bridal wear.
In February 2016 Roland Mouret returned to London to celebrate his 20th anniversary as a designer. After more than 10 years of fashion show in Paris, the brand returns to present its autumn-winter collection of 2017 in the fashionable capital, where the creative path of the designer begins.
