THE GALIERA MUSEUM IN PARIS
When in 1876 the duchess of Galiera Marie Brinol-Sale became a widow she decides to make a museum where to present her collection of drawings of Paris. With the help of the architect Leon Djinain the Neo-Renaissance building of the today’s museum Galiera is raised and it is open six years after the death of the duchess in 1888.
Twenty years after that the museum is finished the historian Maurice Leloire founds “Société de l'Histoire du Costume”. He promised to give his full collection of 2 000 historical clothes, but only on condition that they will be kept in the museum of the fashion in Paris. In 1977 the collection is moved at its today’s place – in the palace Galiera.
Today the collection in the museum includes more than 100 000 exhibits given as a present from different person. The toilets present the tendencies in the clothing in the capital of the fashion - Paris from 18th century till today. The collection of Galiera is too delicate to be showed constantly in the museum. After that it was exhibited four months every exhibit is kept at total darkness for not less than four years to be avert the amortizing influence of the air and of the light.
Today the exhibitions seize a territory bigger than 400 square meters and they include a little collection of related with the fashion drawings or historical documents. The museum doesn’t have a constant collection and it is open only for temporal exhibitions.
