Beyonce: always look for the balance in fashion
You are a singer and a designer. How did your House of Dereon line was created?
My fans kept asking where they could get clothes like Destiny's Child's, so it was only natural for us to do a clothing line. I was adamant about not putting my name on something that I didn't love.
What’s most important to you when designing something with your name behind it?
I am adamant about fit. I have worn dresses from all different price ranges, and the thing that couture dresses have in common is that the fit is amazing.
Does your music inspire the designs?
Definitely. I always talk about fashion in my lyrics. The clothes are not made for the stage, but they are made for women who want to feel like superstars and have eyes on them when they walk into a room.
Have you ever had a wardrobe malfunctions on stage?
I once fell down the stairs because my heel got caught in the hem of my coat. But really, I have fallen down the stairs a lot of times, so I can't only blame it on the coat!
How do you plan your outfits' appearances?
I usually get them in my dreams. I call my mom and I say: "I woke up from this dream. I was wearing gold and I was a robot." So she makes about 50 robot suits and we choose from those.
What do you like to wear when you go out at night?
My style offstage is so different from onstage. I love a pair of sexy heels with jeans, a nice jacket, or a little dress. Heels and nice earrings — I always have to have that!

Have you always had a knack for fashion?
No, no, no. At one point, I was a tomboy and wouldn't wear dresses. And, when I first became a teenager, I hated purses.
Who do you consider great fashion icons?
Tina Turner is someone that I admire, because she made her strength feminine and sexy. Marilyn Monroe, because she was a curvy woman but has become a standard for style and beauty. Jackie Kennedy, because she was so classic and chic
What do you look for when trying on clothes?
I always accentuate my waist. Plunging necks look good on me. My arms are full, and certain cuts make them look even fuller. My legs are really curved and look longer in straight leg jeans.
Should women shop for what's trendy or what works best for them?
It's all about finding the balance between what is fashionable and really fits us. Most women don't want to take the time to figure out their style. It's okay to experiment a little bit, but we should not forget what fits best our body.
What's the best fashion advice that you can impart to our readers?
TINA: Spend a little time figuring out which style suits you the most. Go to a shop, try on clothes and figure out what underlines the best the qualities of your body.
What is one thing you must do before you leave the house?
I usually don't leave without mascara.
