STEVEN MEISEL – PROVOCATIVE, BUT OBJECTIVE
Galia Rumenova
Between Anna and Franca – in this way shortly could be defined the career of Steven Meisel – one of the most famous contemporary photographers. And if you still didn’t remember who these two ladies are, we will help you. These are two of the most influential women in the fashion: Anna Wintour – editor in chief of the American “Vogue” and Franca Sozani – editor in chief of the Italian “Vogue”. Steven Meisel doesn’t use even the privilege to photograph the cover of every issue of the fashion Bible that comes out of Italy.
Steven Meisel was born in 1954 in USA. He acquires world popularity thanks to the photos that he has made for Madonna for her book “Sex” (1992).
His interest to the photography dates from his early childhood, when he starts to draw portraits of women. He starts to buy “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar”, from where he obtains inspiration for his drawings.
At 12 years he asks his friends to contact with agencies for models and under the pretence that they are secretaries of Richard Avedon – a guru in the area of the fashion photography – to get some photos of famous models.
The first working place of Meisel is with the cult designer Halston as an illustrator. He shares that he has never imagine that he will become a photographer. Later, when he works for the magazine ”Women’s wear daily” he succeeds to convince some models from agency to pose to him. After that the photos are ready the models them selves send the photos to the magazine “Seventeen”. The editor in chief of the magazine is delighted by the photos and he contacts with Steven Meisel. Like this starts his professional career behind the objective. The specialists in the branch think that with his work Steven creates important tendencies in the photograph art. They are obvious in the photo sessions that he makes for “Prada”, “Dolce and Gabanna”, “Valentino”, “Versace”.
Steven Meisel often is called a discoverer of models – just to him owe their careers names like Sasha Pivovarova, Snejana Onopka, James Russo etc.
Meisel is famous with his provocative creative concepts. In the Italian “Vogue” from July 2005 is published a photographer’s story called “Madness for change”. There Steven Meisel follows his models before and after plastic surgical treatments – they talk at their mobiles even during the sisters prepare them for the meeting with the scalpel.
This month came out the so called “black Vogue”, photographed again wholly by Steven Meisel. The edition consists only of black models – Naomi Campbell, Lia Kabede, Cecil Lopez etc. Steven Meisel is also famous with the fact that he doesn’t like to be photographed and to give interviews, as he has published one and only book with his photos.
